Chapter Eleven

“Are you ready?” Harriet whispered, joining me in the kitchen. She was dressed all in black, from her neck to her ankles. She even wore a black beanie.

My gaze scanned her up and down, and I clamped my lips together, but it still didn’t stop the giggle from escaping. It sounded more like a snort than a giggle. She looked like a classic thief from the movies. If I didn’t know better, I would have said she was Catherine Zeta-Jones’ twin from Entrapment.

“What…are…you…wearing?” I asked shaking my head. “I think hanging around with Elliot has gone to your head. He’s the movie actor, remember?”

She rolled her eyes and headed for the door. “Don’t be silly. There is no harm trying to blend in with the scenery, is there? There’s less chance of anyone seeing me. Let’s go.”

I followed her out, careful to close the door behind me as quietly as possible. Smoke escaped my lips with every breath, and the chilled early morning air bit my skin like needles. A layer of goose bumps ran over my shoulders, and I shivered.

So much for my tracksuit keeping me warm. Maybe I should have worn the same as Harriet. At least her head is warm with that beanie on.

“I’ll drive,” Harriet said. She had the doors open, and the car started before I had a chance to offer a rebuttal.

Does that woman even feel the cold at all?

I shook my head at her eagerness. “Sounds good to me.” The film set wasn’t far out of town, but far enough to allow a sliver of doubt to enter my mind. “Are you sure we’re doing the right thing?”

“Of course.” She turned off the main street leading out of town, and the buzz of my phone against my legs had my heart jumping out of my skin.

Harriet tutted. “Who is that calling at this hour?”

The smiling face of Eli lit up my screen, and I breathed out a muffled breath, putting the phone to my ear. “Eli, what on earth are you doing ringing me at this hour?”

“I’m sorry, Evelyn. I didn’t mean to wake you.”

The worry etched in his words had the hairs on the back of my neck standing to attention. “Is everything okay?”

“I’m not sure. I was exhausted after the busy day, but every time I closed my eyes or just about dozed off, I kept seeing you in my dreams.”

“Excuse me?” I said, the rising temperature in my body thawing out my cold extremities. “You’re dreaming about me?”

“What?” Harriet whispered, her eyes glistening with anticipation.

Eli was quick to add. “Not the way you think. Something’s wrong. I can feel it, and I was worried about you.”

I put my finger to my lips and shushed Harriet, then turned my full attention on Eli. “What are you talking about?”

“Evelyn, dark forces are around. I can feel them. I don’t know exactly what is going on. All I know is that you kept appearing in my dream as soon as my eyelids closed, and you didn’t look happy.
